Lately

Clementine at 3:

// When I returned from an overnight trip, I asked "what did you have for dinner?"
   C: "The pizza car came."

// Her class has been doing a gardening project and talking about growing.
C: "I'm going to grow big like a flower...I'm going to drive... drink coffee...wear a hat... not throw my food on the floor... cut with a knife."

// Instructing Josie to raise her head in a yoga pose: "Up your head, Josie!"

// "We go to the zoo to see lions, alligators, zebras, and cheetos."

// Her phrase for anything loud/scary/sustained is "a big storm" ....

After a multi-second fart ... "my toots is a big storm!" Later: "Funder [thunder] toot!"

// She sniffed my arm after I spritzed on perfume (her sniffs are quick exhalations on the object of interest): "What does my nose smell?"

// For a while we'd say We're going to have a great day tomorrow! as we closed her door for the night and she'd shout WE WILL! but it sounded like WE WHEEL!

// She usually sings to herself at night and it's so funny to hear the bits of songs - right now it's Down By the Bay ... (did you ever see a whale with a po-tah dot tail? DOWNBYDABAY...)

// Almost everything is/was her fave-wit [favorite]. Current fave-wits:

Puzzles
The Little Mermaid, Curious George, Penguins of Madagascar, Daniel Tiger
Quesadillas, hummus + carrots, cherry tomatoes, oranges, mac and cheese, doughnuts, sliced cheese, salami
Llama Llama Mad at Mama
Fern Hollow
Playing Memory Yoga
Going to the grocery store - maybe we get cake pops?
Baking - I help you bake?
"The park with the swing and the slide! We go to the park with the swing and the slide - yeah, that's a good idea!"
Dancing along with The Nutcracker
All things pink or purple

// She and Josie like to play with their wooden coffee mugs and cups and Luke pantomimed adding cream to Clem's which enraged her and she dumped it out... turned over the empty mug and shook out every drop of imaginary coffee.

Josie at 21 months:

She knows body parts and can follow complicated commands - she knows everything; the names and whereabouts of each book, 'do yoga', brush teeth... Her expressed vocabulary now includes: mama, dada, baba [bottle], agua, trash [trasshhhhhhhhhhhh with a sustained shh], cheese, apple, bubble, backpack, ball, shoe, and boot. Animal sounds for dog, cat, cow, and bear/lion. Most importantly she attempting more sounds now.

She loves stuffed animals. C became fond of her baby doll around 2.5 and now sleeps with one every night (we have three mostly identical ones but she insists on 'the baby with the up and down eyes') but Josie has had a doll or animal under her arm since about one. Her favorite is a Curious George doll from school that they allow us to take home.

Josie was a very easygoing, loving baby. When she turned twelve months, she lost her love bug tendencies. She has a short temper and is quick to squeal-scream, hit, and pull hair. Now that her speech is coming around, I sense improvement imminently but jeez it's a been a tough year. Most days she does not nap at daycare and is exhausted and cranky at home. (She naps on the weekend, thank goodness). She's becoming more independent. Now she wants to carry her own lunchbox and hold my hand when we go to C's classroom to collect her.

She's much more omnivorous than her sister: spinach dip and saag paneer, pork rinds (loves), green beans, bites of meat.

She went through a delightful phase of going to sleep immediately but now wails for 5-10 minutes before collapsing after her thirteen-hours-awake bender.

Her favorite books are: Sleepy Time, Babies, Opposites, and Blue Hat Green Hat. She'll listen for about a third or a half of a longer book like The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses, one of my favorites from childhood.

What's Making Me Happy This Week

// Listening to my new Lucius record Wildewoman. We saw them in Michigan two years ago. I ordered this and their new album, the latter accidentally as a CD rather than record.

//  I don't put a lot of thought into which movies and shows are incorporated in the viewing cycle but Penguins of Madagascar is on Netflix and the girls love it. This 'Dibble me' scene cracks me up:

Clem is long way away from understanding plot and characters... despite having seen The Little Mermaid at least 20 times, when Ariel and Eric kiss at their wedding she exclaims: Ariel has two daddies!    Ummmmm...

She donned her superhero cape* the other day and started zooming around saying I'm a superhero! Save the day! I'm a superhero! I'm a boy!

ALL STOP.

Clearly we need to watch more movies that involve crushing rather than reinforcing the patriarchy. Mulan?

// My new Fitbit Blaze. My old Fitbit died, giving me the opportunity to buy this watch. I love it so far! I wanted text and calendar notifications (to keep me off my phone) and fitness info because I love toys and me and this is a toy all about me! The most important thing I've learned from it so far is that I've averaged only 5 hours and 40 minutes of sleep per night this week. Terrible! Getting up early for iron class worsens this sleep debt but I think the overall benefit of intense exercise (I deadlifted 95 lb 96 times this morning! [6 rounds of 16 repetitions] is worth it.

*these capes are the cutest thing ever aaaaaaand I'll probably buy two sets of these wings soon.

Escondido

Videos + tidbits.

Josie jumping - Clem and her three part curtsy. The downward glance and impatient pause for applause slay me.

On Thursday my friend from high school came allll the way from Abilene to see her favorite band of the moment, Escondido.

Brady brought Jackie, who is clearly a lot of fun.

Clem: I wuv your fwowers! ... I can wear dem?

Talking with lead singer Jessica who I thought looked a lot like Shania Twain even before she said she's Canadian.

So fun! The band was so gracious and chatted with us for a while. Curiously, I used to listen to way more music and get introduced to new bands through Pandora but now never listen to music (replaced by podcasts and audiobooks) and rarely go to shows. (At the show I told Brady about meeting Ally from Po'girl, now of Birds of Chicago, at Luke's apartment when to me she was Pandora Rock Star and how I was completely starstruck.)

So notes: keep in touch with old friends, wear a flower crown, listen to music, support the arts!

Luke played three shows in two days on Friday and Saturday. On Saturday evening I promised the girls ice cream so here they are, pre-outing. I think Josie might have worn pjs all day.

Such a sweet moment and then we resumed our usual operational tempo of Sororicide Threat Level Delta.

(Grasping at lullaby-straws, a while ago I started singing Clem "Not in Nottingham" from Disney's Robin Hood.)

She found and put on this swim cap.

Everyone knows you have to support the head.

When you need to take care of your baby but also really want to watch Curious George.

TAKE A PICTURE OF MY HAND!

A snapshot of Toddlerville.

On Sunday Luke and Josie were still sleeping and Clem was up and wanted to pway - I hustled her straight into the car and we went Shipley donuts which I recognize was only 13 hours after the ice cream run. It seems the only tool in my parenting skillset is a spoon.

TAKE A PICTURE OF MY MOUF!

Then a shirtless Clem and sweats-that-I-slept-in moi went to Target at 8 am to see the Marimekko line.

More rain that day = back to Old McDonald's to get the wiggles out.

Found Kosmic Kids Frozen Yoga by googling 'yoga for kids'. An Australian woman narrates and acts out Frozen with yoga poses. Clem will follow along for about 5-10 minutes.

A huge storm overnight caused flooding all over San Antonio and our main thoroughfare not even a block away was a river with cresting waves. Nonetheless we made it to Koi for haircuts. I met Erin at a salon in Southtown in 2011 and then she and her co-worker struck out on their own a third of a mile from our house. And now they've renovated a space a wee bit closer, just a quarter mile away, and it's gorgeous.

Ever since Clem's first one circa age one, she's been completely still and silent throughout the entire haircut. Not a peep. Not a smile. Her tongue sticks out a little bit because she's concentrating. At home, if I produce a brush from a drawer because her hair is tang-a-wee - hysterics.

While I was in the kitchen after the haircut I heard an engine turning over, turning over, turning over. A neighbor's car must have been damaged by the rain, I thought. When Luke arrived home a few minutes later, he said, your car is trying to turn itself on with no key in the ignition.

???

A trip to the autoshop and the dealership ensued. This malfunction was immediately preceded by that drive through deep water - only temporally related? Mechanistically related? But of course the problem resolved itself as they inevitably do when in front of the people who would fix it so we'll see... we're that much closer to Clementine's dream of a mini-wan (the mechanics say it's not unsafe).

And finally, Josie felt like photos, Clem didn't.

In Others' Words

Taking It Home to Jerome by David Kirby

In Baton Rouge, there was a DJ on the soul station who was
always urging his listeners to “take it on home to Jerome.”

No one knew who Jerome was. And nobody cared. So it
didn’t matter. I was, what, ten, twelve? I didn’t have anything

to take home to anyone. Parents and teachers told us that all
we needed to do in this world were three things: be happy,

do good, and find work that fulfills you. But I also wanted
to learn that trick where you grab your left ankle in your

right hand and then jump through with your other leg.
Everything else was to come, everything about love:

the sadness of it, knowing it can’t last, that all lives must end,
all hearts are broken. Sometimes when I’m writing a poem,

I feel as though I’m operating that crusher that turns
a full-size car into a metal cube the size of a suitcase.

At other times, I’m just a secretary: the world has so much
to say, and I’m writing it down. This great tenderness.

My friend Amy had her baby last week and her husband's name is Jerome. Once again Writer's Almanac delivers in a creepy prescient way. Always enjoyable, sometimes a gut punch.

Elise Visits!

My sister Elise agreed to postpone a girls' weekend in Arizona for ... this.

On Thursday I ran out of work, picked up the girls, and hustled to the airport to pick her up. Then we swung through Taco Cabana (I love Taco Banana!  said Clementine) for quesadillas. The next morning we went to Alamo 180 at 6 am -- WELCOME TO YOUR VACATION, ELISE!

We tackled my closet - Elise is excellent at KonMari-ing things and we culled three bags for the Goodwill, one box for my SIL Amy, one bag of trash-bound items, and a few items to be cleaned and a few in need of alteration. (Which I've since gotten back from the dry cleaner and will pick up from the seamstress on Tuesday - yaaaaasssssss clean).

Now I have a wear-now closet full of things I'd forgotten that I own

and a future-work closet full of the clothes I've purchased in anticipation of my post-military career. Not pictured: the purple-navy nail polish I bought this morning at the salon because COLORS.

Have I told you we're moving back to St Louis this summer?!!

We walked to Torchy's for a marg, queso, and guac* and sat at the bar for quicker service. We grilled the girl next to us about her amazing technicolor ombre eyeshadow (two blended Sephora pencils, noted).

*devoting my last 100 Texas days to eating as much Tex-Mex food as possible. Maybe not as much, but as frequently. No, as much too. Moving on.

If you're thinking 'you're wearing workout clothes nine hours after your workout and that seems normal for you but you're wearing makeup and that's, er, unusual' - you're right! We also went to Ulta, the results of which I'll detail later.

Diet cranberry limeades happy hour price bishes.

On Saturday we went to a Row&Flow class at Energy X - 30 minutes of HIIT rowing/kettlebell/suspension trainer and 30 minutes of yoga. It was a sister party - the class consisted us and the instructor and her two sisters. SISTER PARTY!

Lunch was a sister party at California Pizza Kitchen with these two followed by a trip to the Landa library playground.

That evening Luke and Clementine went to the ballet at the Tobin Center. She lasted about 30 minutes before going to do what she really wanted, running up and down the wide stairs outside. Meanwhile, I convinced Elise to buy a cast iron skillet.

Elise escaped left on Sunday. After Row&Flow, C and I went to Central Market for grilled cheese and sprinkles for the cake pops we made for her class. Here she is removing the grapes from the fruit medley with surgical precision. When is someone going to tell the melon farmers that NO ONE LIKES CANTALOUPE?

Fact.

I promised her the playground but as we drove down Broadway she shouted I WANT TO GO TO OLD MCDONALD'S!

p.s. I hope she calls it Old McDonald's for years, it's hilarious.

$1.50 iced coffee and the Playplace it was. MOMMY I CAN SEE YOU I SEE YOU MOMMY!

XOXO Elise! Next stop Fairmont Scottsdale Princess - my treat!

...after you help me organize our new apartment.

What's Making Me Happy This Week

// Texted this to Amy for the LOLs and one day later it was too late - she had her beautiful baby girl! Amy had her baby! is part of one of my favorite Maria Bamford bits - enjoy your fresh one, Amy!

// Elise brought up the concept of a 'one marshmallow person' and no later than 24 hours it was mentioned in No-Drama Discipline. Elise and I frequently Baader-Meinhof phenomenon each other... or do we really?!

// Received in the mail on the same day. Guess which one was thumbed through first.

// Josie's added BUBBLE and NO to her vocabulary.

What's Making Me Happy This Week

// This side-splitting meme because it's ME.

// The new Essentials shop at Nordstrom.com. Other than flower crowns, these are the things I want to wear.

// Speaking of Nordstrom, my mom bought me a leather midi skirt and I am REAL EXCITED ABOUT IT. Thanks, Mom!

// Being back at my 5 am iron class - cue the Cheers theme where everyone knows your name...

// Elise's visit this weekend!
